OpenAI is making a major move into consumer hardware with a project named SweetPea. These AI-powered earbuds are being designed by Jony Ive, the visionary behind the iPhone and AirPods while following OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of his design firm. This device will use an unconventional “behind-the-ear” design which is built to house a powerful 2nm processor that handles AI tasks locally, ensuring fast and private performance.
Unlike standard earbuds, here SweetPea is designed to act as a phone replacement with high performance. Using built-in microphones and cameras, this device continuously senses your environment while allowing it to offer proactive assistance without a “wake word.” This constant awareness lets users control apps and services entirely through voice, making the digital experience hands-free and more intuitive.
OpenAI has made a goal to launch SweetPea by September 2028 and it is aiming for up to 50 million units in its first year. By combining Ive’s iconic design language with cutting-edge onboard computing, OpenAI hopes to redefine wearable technology and provide a legitimate, AI-first alternative to Apple’s dominant AirPods.
